San Diego Police Officer Shoots Suspect During Chase In Balboa Park
Detectives are currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
SAN DIEGO, CA — An investigation was underway Wednesday after an officer-involved shooting in San Diego's Balboa Park.
At about 4p.m. Tuesday, San Diego Police Department officers attempted to stop a man who was riding a bicycle in the 2900 block of Balboa Drive. The man fled from officers, first on the bicycle and then on foot, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
Two officers pursued him through the park and onto a nearby hillside. During the pursuit, the suspect turned toward the officers and fired one round from a firearm, sheriff's officials said. A San Diego Police Department officer returned fire, discharging multiple rounds that struck the suspect.

Officers rendered medical aid and called for paramedics. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff's office.
No officers were injured during the incident, officials said. A firearm was recovered at the scene. The suspect is expected to face criminal charges.

The San Diego County Sheriffs' Office's Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved shooting investigation. At this stage of the investigation, the motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation, according to the sheriff's office. Detectives are currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the United States Attorney's office will also be monitoring the investigation, according to the sheriff's office.
