Owner ask guest to pay for his meal first and all others paid after
An incident at a favorite Castro Valley restaurant on Tuesday Nov 22 at CHINA GARDEN 22253 Redwood Rd (across from Traders) - I have eaten here many times over the years and I am sure new owners have come and gone, yet the food is always good and very fresh.
But this matter does not concern their dishes or menu - This was a customer service issue of profiling a customer.
This is a sit down order from a menu restaurant - order your food, they serve it, then you pay your check as you leave. (done deal) same with take out - pay when you get your food.

On Tuesday Nov 22, 2022 - I had the lunch special that ends at 3pm.
At about 3pm I noticed a young man take a table - and he is an urban kid - from the black community - well mannered - I didn’t mean to overhear his order from his table.
The waitress clearly told him “you have to pay first before we serve you” . He seemed to agree and he showed he had money as he laid 100.00 bill on the table. - I really could not believe this.

As I was paying my bill after my meal all the other customers paid after they ate their meals. I had to make this truly was the case. I approached the young man and asked him, did she ask you to pay for your meal first? He told me yes she did. Does this happen a lot to you? He told me no, and that he was just hungry and couldn’t order the lunch special so he ordered the items separately.
I was then approached by the lead waitress who asked me if anything was wrong - I tried to remain low key, she had seen me talk to the customer. But then the second waitress came to get my payment - I did ask her if some customers are asked to pay first, she yelled I don’t know the whole story. Did this guy dine and dash in the past? He told me this was his first time in Castro Valley and at CHINA GARDEN.
The head waitress finally approached me and scolded and said “this none of business'') and she mentioned that the owner chef told me this was none of my business as she took money from the man. The cook manager told me to make sure he pays first.
RacialProfiling I he told me was nothing he had experienced in the past and thought all the customers at this restaurant had to pay first.
Its sad the owner supports this kind of profiling.
I can not return to this restaurant .
