Major Grocery Chain Closing Store In East Bay: Reports

With its lease ending, the company said it has decided to shift strategies, according to a report by KRON4.

HAYWARD, CA — A major grocery chain will be closing its East Bay location by early 2026, according to a report by KRON4.

Safeway's location in Hayward's Jackson Triangle will be closing in late February, with the company saying it has decided to shift strategies after "carefully" considering its options, according to the report.

This is the fourth Safeway store in the Bay Area to close in just over a year, according to a report by the San Francisco Chronicle. Those stores were in San Francisco, Pinole and Vallejo, according to the report.

No layoffs are planned at the store, and workers will instead be transferred to other stores across the region, according to the report.

Safeway's parent company, Albertsons, planned to merge with Kroger multiple years ago, but the deal was blocked by federal regulators in 2024. The deal would have reshaped California's grocery market, impacting prices and jobs across more than 1,000 stores.
