SAN LEANDRO, CA – The Alameda County Office of Education has opened a new school for teen parents in San Leandro. Support services include: prenatal, health, and nutrition education; college and career counseling; enrichment and recreational activities; and child care and development. Any pregnant or parenting student in Alameda County is eligible to enroll. Students are typically identified by parents, counselors, nurses, doctors, other students and local agencies.

The new school is named the Carolyn Hobbs Academy. Hobbs is a retired principal who served ACOE for 22 years in various roles including as a teacher, coordinator and Principal of ACOE’s Parenting Teen Programs.

"I am humbled as well as honored to have the school named after me," said Hobbs. "But it is not just me, it is all of the people whom I have worked with over the years. It was definitely a team effort. It all belongs with them and it would not be possible without them."

The Carolyn Hobbs Academy in San Leandro operates in partnership with La Plazita Preschool. La Plazita is a dual-immersion preschool that will help serve English Language Learner students. La Plazita’s location is more central to where students served by this program live, specifically in both East Oakland and San Leandro and provides enhanced support for English learners.

"I’m excited that we’ve chosen to name this new school in honor of Carolyn Hobbs, who demonstrated an unrelenting belief that all students can succeed," said Alameda County Superintendent of Schools Alysse Castro. "She remains an indefatigable force behind prioritizing the needs of young families as a top priority in Alameda County."

Fruitvale Academy in Oakland, also a Parenting Teen Program, closed at the end of January.

ACOE’s Parenting Teen Program, for both moms and dads, provides on-site child care to support students as they strive to complete their high school graduation requirements. Students have access to curriculum and support services to develop the skills and experiences needed to provide a safe and caring environment for themselves and their children.
