Actor Simu Liu To Speak At CU Later This Month

The Chinese-Canadian actor is best known for his starring role in Marvel Studio's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings."

BOULDER, CO —Actor Simu Liu, best known for his starring role in Marvel Studio's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings," is scheduled to give a talk at the University of Colorado later this month, the school announced Thursday.

The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23 at Macky Auditorium, and it will be hosted by CU Boulder's student-run Distinguished Speakers Board (DSB) and Cultural Events Board (CEB). Doors open at 6 p.m.

Tickets to the event are $2 for students, $10 for faculty and staff and $15 for the general public.

Students and faculty and staff can get their tickets starting Wednesday at the first-floor event table in the University Memorial Center. Sales will take place on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A valid Buff OneCard and cash will be required at the time of purchase.

Tickets for the general public will be available online beginning at 10 am. Wednesday.

The 32-year-old Liu was born in Harbin, China and immigrated to Canada at the age of five. In addition to his role in Ten Rings (2021), Liu starred in the CBC/Netflix comedy series "Kim's Convenience." He's also starring in the upcoming film "Arthur the King" alongside Mark Wahlberg and Nathalie Emmanuel. The film is scheduled for release later this year.

Meanwhile, Liu also is releasing his memoir "We Are Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story."

"Simu Liu made history as the first Asian-Canadian lead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe," said Anuja Gore, CEB chair. "His accomplishments as an actor, producer, and soon-to-be author set him apart as someone truly extraordinary. CEB, in collaboration with the DSB, is beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with him."

According to a release, past CEB speakers have included: Tarana Burke, Viola Davis, Kevin Hines, Hasan Minhaj, John Kasich and Aly Raisman.

While DSB speakers have included: Anderson Cooper, Trevor Noah, Brené Brown, Laverne Cox, Edward Snowden (via videoconference) and Scott Kelly.

"Engaging with speakers who stand out as distinguished for their ability to inspire, motivate and lead our community provides a welcome opportunity for diversity of thought," said DSB chair Sawyer Bundgaard. "Therefore, DSB along with CEB are proud to host Simu Liu for his accomplishments in entertainment and activism, and we welcome him to our university."
