Apple Announces Jobs Expansion: Boulder Is On The List

BOULDER, CO -- Austin is getting a $1 billion Apple campus, the tech giant announced Thursday, and other new sites are in the works in Seattle, San Diego, and Culver City. Though Colorado won't host one of the big four projects announced in this round of expansion, Boulder did make a short list of cities where Apple plans to expand employment with hundreds of new jobs. Other cities mentioned were New York and Pittsburgh.

“Apple is proud to bring new investment, jobs and opportunity to cities across the United States and to significantly deepen our quarter-century partnership with the city and people of Austin,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a statement “Talent, creativity and tomorrow’s breakthrough ideas aren’t limited by region or zip code, and, with this new expansion, we’re redoubling our commitment to cultivating the high-tech sector and workforce nationwide.”

Apple already claims credit for more than 2 million jobs nationwide, from advanced design and engineering to retail and customer service. It was not immediately clear what sort of jobs would be coming to Boulder under the most recent expansion. According to the most recent press release, Boulder could see 100–250 new jobs by 2022.

The announcement comes amid perennial debate over the jobs-housing balance in Boulder, newly ignited this month after Diagonal Plaza was designated as a federal Opportunity Zone.
