AstraZeneca To Lay Off 210 Workers In Boulder And Longmont

The pharmaceutical company will close down operations at two former Amgen facilities.

BOULDER, CO -- AstraZeneca has filed notice with the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment — the international pharmaceutical company will be shutting down its operations in the area, resulting in layoffs for 210 employees. The closures will affect AstraZeneca's locations in both Boulder and Longmont. According to state regulations, all employees must be provided 60 days of notice prior to layoffs.

"Approximately 210 employees are impacted and those employees will exit the organization (March 22) with full decommissioning of the facilities to be completed by fourth quarter 2019," AstraZeneca spokeswoman Michele L. Meixell confirmed in an email to the Daily Camera. "We will work with employees on a one-on-one basis to assess opportunities, including other potential roles within the organization."

According to company, AstraZeneca purchased its Boulder facility at 5500 Airport Rd. in 2015, and its Longmont location at 4000 Nelson Rd. in the fall of 2016. Both facilities were formerly owned by Amgen, Inc, and were intended to expand AstraZeneca's biologics manufacturing capabilities. At the time of purchase, AstraZeneca estimated that its Boulder facility alone could employ as many as 400 workers.
