Boulder County Jail Inmate Chokes On Food, Is Hospitalized

The inmate was still unconscious as he was transported to a local hospital.

BOULDER, CO -- A male inmate from the Boulder County Jail has been hospitalized after he apparently choked on some food, according to a press release from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. On Monday at approximately 8:00 PM, deputies responded to the intake module after hearing a call for help for a 72-year-old male inmate who was in medical distress.

Deputies and jail nursing staff found the inmate unconscious and unresponsive. While the Heimlich maneuver was successful in dislodging some food from the inmate’s throat, he remained unconscious and not breathing. Other life-saving measures including CPR were used and continued as an American Medical Response ambulance and personnel arrived on scene and assisted with the care.

Although medical and jail personnel were able to regain a pulse on the inmate, he remained unconscious at the time he was transported to a local hospital.
