Boulder Police Look To Stem Recent Onslaught Of Car Thefts

Previously apprehended thieves have told police they specifically target Boulder because many residents leave their cars and homes unlocked.

BOULDER, CO — The Boulder Police issued a warning to the community on Tuesday in attempt to draw attention to a recent uptick in car thefts across the city. According to a police department statement, 18 vehicles have been stolen so far in April—and only two were reported to have been locked at the time of the theft. There have also been 21 incidents of vehicle trespass this month, and in the majority of those cases, the suspects entered through an unlocked door.

Of the 18, seven were parked unlocked with the keys inside the vehicle, three were parked and running with the keys in the ignition, two were motorcycles taken from parking spaces, and the remaining six reported varied information about how the suspected thieves obtained the keys.

Police noted that in the past, thieves who have been arrested have admitted that they come to Boulder specifically because residents often leave their homes and cars unlocked.
