City Trees To Be Moved For Underpass Construction

16 trees will be moved from the Foothills median to three other locations within the city. There will be possible traffic impacts this week.

BOULDER, CO -- As the City of Boulder prepares for construction of the Foothills Parkway Bicycle and Underpass Project, 16 trees in the area will be transplanted to other locations in the city. The trees, currently located on the Foothills Parkway median south of Colorado Avenue, will be moved between April 2 and April 4.

Six of the trees will be transplanted to the Flatirons Golf Course, and the remaining 10 trees will be transplanted to the ongoing Arapahoe Avenue Underpass project area at the east end of the Civic Area near Broadway and 13th Street. An additional tree located near the roadway will be transplanted to a new location within Park East Park.

The new Foothills underpass is being constructed to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines and to replace the current bridge, which the city reports is at the end of its service life. The new underpass will also complete connections to adjacent bicycle and pedestrian paths and the city plans to use it to feature public art and landscaping.

The northbound and southbound lanes of Foothills Parkway adjacent to Park East Park will be shifted to the outside shoulder with a 30 mph speed limit during the work. The lane shift and tree transplants will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Details of the travel impact can be found on the city's Cone Zones website.
