Longmont Police Make Arrests In Arson, Car Theft Case

Longmont police have arrested four 13 and 14-year-olds in connection with the string of crimes.

LONGMONT, CO -- Longmont police located a stolen maroon Chevy Impala in northwest Longmont Tuesday, along with a flare gun believed to be used in a string of early-morning crimes associated with the vehicle theft, according to a news release from the Longmont Police Department.

Based on initial information gathered by officers, two males were identified as suspects. Officers and detectives teamed up, located, and ultimately arrested four juvenile males ages 13 and 14, who were taken into custody by the Longmont Police.

Police say that there is no indication at this time why any of the arson locations were targeted, and detectives will continue to investigate to see if additional crimes were committed.

Due to the age of the suspects, their names and identities are not being released.

Three incidents occurred early Tuesday morning in which flares were fire from from the car, according to a previous news release from the Longmont Police Department. Police believed that the cases were connected as all three involved some type of flare and a similarly described vehicle. The reported vehicle, a dark colored sedan, matched the description of a maroon Chevy Impala that was believed to be stolen overnight from the east side of Longmont.

At about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, police reported that a car pulled up in front of King Soopers on North Main Street. An occupant fired some type of flare into the store, and the vehicle fled. There were no injuries.

At 5:35 a.m. a car pulled up in front of a house on Pratt Street. An occupant fired some type of flare into the house, and the vehicle fled. There were no injuries, although there was a small amount of damage inside the house.

About 6:10 a.m. an occupant of a car fired some type of flare into a field on Airport Road in Longmont. The fire caused by the flare was small and was quickly extinguished.

The license plate on the sedan reported as stolen was reported as 421-MGJ, from Minnesota.
