Erie Ranked As 1 Of The 3 Safest Cities In America

Communities in Virginia and Texas also made the exclusive Pennygeeks list.

ERIE, CO -- For a small community on the Front Range, Erie has garnered big notice in a nationwide ranking by Pennygeeks, a website dedicated to documenting studies and rates for car insurance. Erie was listed as one of the top three safest cities nationwide in the analysis released this week. The other two towns to land on the list were Alexandria, Va., and Round Rock, Texas.

According to Pennygeeks, Erie's "340 days of sunshine every year and some of the lowest crime rates in the country" are a reason to "see the brighter side of life."

Neighborhoodscout.com states that there are just 0.89 violent crimes per 1,000 people in Erie, making it numerically safer than 81% of the country’s metro areas. The Pennygeeks designation also took into account community amenities, public schools, and affordable housing, noting that Niche.com, a site that ranks neighborhoods based on a factors that include crime rates, health care and jobs, awarded Erie an “A+” overall grade.

"Statewide operations targeting gang activities in Colorado’s city centers have contributed to Erie’s success in cracking down on crime," explains the Pennygeeks report. "However, community policing efforts – such as neighborhood watch groups – have also helped curb criminal activity in residential areas."
