Man Falls Through Ice, Jumps From Moving Car To Escape Rescuers

Though hypothermic, the man was clearly not immediately amenable to help.

BOULDER, CO -- A man who fell through the ice at Gross Reservoir on Saturday, Dec. 29 then attempted to escape from his rescuers by jumping out of a moving vehicle and running into the woods, according to a press release from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. It was a tough afternoon for the 51-year-old, who reportedly ended up passed out in a gully.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday, the Denver Water Recreation Manager saw the man fall through the ice at Gross Dam Reservoir. The Denver Water Manager alerted the Boulder County Regional Communications Center, who dispatched deputies and medical personnel. The man was able to get out of the water on his own and then climb up the steep embankment surrounding the reservoir, where he was met by the Denver Water Manager who realized the male was clearly hypothermic and intoxicated, according to the county sheriff's office.

The manager offered to give the man a ride in his truck to their station so he could stay warm, however while they were driving the man opened the door and jumped out of the moving vehicle. He ran into a wooded area and down a steep embankment. Deputies and Coal Creek Fire arrived on scene, and Coal Creek Fire personnel found the male passed out down a gully. They were able to wake him up and walk him to the command post.
