Before she was found, authorities said that the girl's friends told them they had received messages that they believe could be from her saying she was safe with a “family” in Arizona and did not want to return home. At the time, police had been unable to confirm if these claims were true or if the messages were actually from the missing teen.

“We are incredibly grateful for the partnership of state and federal agencies, who through a variety of investigative efforts, helped our detectives bring [the teen] home,” Police Chief Maris Herold said in the most recent update. “We are also appreciative of the outpouring of community and media interest in this case.”
