Mysterious 'Spirit Elk' Arrives In East Boulder County

Farmer insists he is not feeding it; deploys name and 'no hunting' signs to protect the visitor.

LONGMONT, CO -- A cow elk — possibly a pregnant cow elk, according to wildlife officials — has taken up residence on a Longmont farm, the Daily Camera reported this week. The farmer, Glen Schultz, grows using regenerative practices, and speculated to the Camera that perhaps the elk had arrived because the grass on Schulz's land tasted better. The elk has been hanging around the area for most of the last year, except for a brief disappearance during mating season, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials.

Schultz asserts that he is not feeding the elk — which would be a misdemeanor offense under Colorado law — though the elk may have eaten some of the feed intended for his cows. Schultz has also posted "no hunting" signs on his property, and says that he has also named the animal "Spirit Elk" as another means of protection.

"I don't think would-be hunters would want to kill the 'Spirit Elk.' You might be haunted," Schultz told the Daily Camera this week with a laugh.
