Police Identify Scam Targeting Boulderites

A telephone scam caller identifies himself as a Boulder police sergeant.

BOULDER, CO -- Boulder police are seeking information about a telephone scammer reported to be targeting Boulderites. On Weds., Dec. 12, two residents contacted the police department to report receiving phone calls in which the caller claimed to be from the Boulder Police Department. The unidentified caller reportedly said he was Sergeant David Spraggs, using the name of an actual employee with the Boulder police.

In the first reported attempt the unidentified caller left a voicemail and requested a callback to a number that is not connected to the police department. The call's recipient contacted police, believing the call was a scam. In the second reported attempt the victim answered the telephone and was told that they had a warrant for their arrest. The victim was scammed $2,000 in the form of gift cards, though it was not reported under what pretenses the gift cards were given.

The police department issued a warning to residents, noting that anyone who represents themselves as law enforcement and request a payment in lieu of a warrant, no matter what form, is a scammer. The department requests that if you receive this type of call, to please make an online report at https://bouldercolorado.gov/police/file-a-report-online or call 303-441-3333.
