Suspected Bike Thieves Arrested By CU Police

Using bait bikes and resident tips, police arrested two suspects in separate incidents over the last two weeks.

BOULDER, CO -- The University of Colorado Police arrested two men in connection with separate incidents of stealing bikes on or near the school's campus, according to a news release from the CU Police Department. On March 22, a resident in the Smiley Court apartments at 1300 30th Street noticed suspicious activity at one of the complex's bike racks and alerted police. Officers responded and arrested Jeremy Alan Leverette on suspicion of theft and possession of burglary tools, according to the release.

A few days later, on March 25, dispatchers noticed that a bait bicycle was moving. The bikes are deployed by police, and contain a GPS chip that can be tracked by law enforcement. Officers responded to the rogue bike and arrested David Roland Wilcox. According to the news relase, he was booked on nine charges including theft, possession of burglary tools, drug possession, as well as three outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court for previous offenses.

The CU Police Department noted that both bikes had been secured to their racks with a cable lock, and recommended that those securing bikes in the area use the u-lock style instead. For bikes tat are registered on campus, the CU Police have partnered with the Environmental Center on a bike lock exchange program. Those with eligible bikes can make a swap at one of the campus bike stations. Details and more bike theft prevention tips are available here.
