Youth Coach Accused Of Sexual Assault On A Child Heads To Trial

Due to Colorado's indeterminate sentencing policy, if convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

BOULDER, CO -- A former Boulder youth soccer coach accused of having a sexual relationship with an underage player is scheduled for trial this summer, according to reporting from the Daily Camera. Philip Peters Hufstader, 36, pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust on Jan. 4 — a class-3 felony with a mandatory prison sentence of eight to 24 years. He is now scheduled for a five-day trial beginning Aug. 12.

The Camera reports that the girl, who was on the FC Boulder youth soccer team that Hufstader coached, testified before the grand jury that Hufstader began giving her free, private lessons and that they would have sex in his car after those lessons, as well as in other locations.

The charges against Hufstader fall under Colorado's indeterminate sentencing policy, which means that, if convicted, Hufstader could spend the rest of his life in prison.
