Latest Coronavirus Breakthrough Case Data In Colorado

COLORADO — Colorado's state public health agency released new data Wednesday that shows the rate of breakthrough COVID-19 cases.

The statistics were released as hospitalizations surge in Colorado — mostly among those who aren't vaccinated, according to Dr. Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Cases per 100,000 people in the week of Aug. 22:

• Vaccinated: 96.1
• Unvaccinated: 327

Hospitalizations per 100,000 in the week of Aug. 15:

• Vaccinated: 3.5
• Unvaccinated: 13.2

While most of the new cases reported in Colorado are the delta variant, vaccinations are largely effective against the variant, public health officials said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration fully approved the Pfizer-BiNTech's coronavirus vaccine Aug. 23 for people ages 16 and older.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends people whose immune systems are moderately to severely compromised receive an additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at least 28 days after their second dose.

Vaccine sites across Colorado are offering gift cards, while supplies last, to anyone who receives a first, second, or now — third dose — of their vaccine.
