Initially, callers had reported Vallejos was threatening pedestrians and cars near West 4th Avenue and North Harlan Street, close to a school bus drop-off area. Vallejos ran from police, who chased him to West 3rd Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard.

After repeated orders to drop the knife, a Lakewood police agent deployed a Taser, but Vallejos still refused to comply, police said. He was shot by at least one Lakewood agent, Romero said. He was immediately transferred to a hospital. No agents were injured in the incident.
