Avon Free Library Wraps up First Company Governor’s Horse Guards Photography Display
The display will down from the Community Gallery at the Avon Free Public Library on Friday, Oct. 7.
After five weeks a photography display of the First Company Governor’s Horse Guards (1 Co GHG) will come down from the Community Gallery at the Avon Free Public Library in Country Club Rd. on Friday, Oct. 7. These selected images from a three-year, long-term photo-documentary project by local professional photographer Deb Key who has recorded the activities of the Troop and the Herd "behind the white fence." Her BW art features 30 large metal prints in addition to reproductions of some vintage prints from the 1CoGHG's archives.
A display of rarely seen cavalry artifacts are currently on display in the glass cases adjacent to the Marian M Hunter History Room in the Library, an area managed by the Avon Historical Society for exhibitions with particular relevance to stories linked to Avon's rich history. It was curated by two long-term officers of the GHG with some of the selected items dating back to the 1870s and WW1 era. The display of saddles, sabers and other military items remain on view until the end of October.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, three separate programs were offered to cater for a variety of interests. Over 100 families enjoyed a “meet-and-greet” with the Horses and the Troopers at 11am. Pony rides and photos were a treat in addition to the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the care of the horses. In the afternoon, Commandant Major Chris Miller gave a slideshow presentation about the Unit's activities while reviewing the history of the oldest continually serving cavalry unit in the USA with a special focus on it's time since moving to Avon. His presentation was followed by a slideshow talk with additional images taken by Deb Key over the past three years. Both presentations were recorded by Reference Librarian Tina Panik as part of the Avon Library’s commitment to preserving the oral history of Avon.
