Learn To Prevent Suicide At Avon Library Program Next Week

The Avon Free Public Library is hosting a special forum where guests will learn the 'QPR' method of suicide prevention.

AVON, CT — The local library is hosting a program next week that will help folks, perhaps, save someone's life with simple acts of kindness and compassion.

The Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Road, is hosting a special training program on QPR, which stands for "question, persuade, and refer."

Those three steps are seen as crucial in helping someone in emotional distress and, possibly, contemplating suicide.

The free program will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the library.

There, Justine Ginsberg, community health coordinator/program director at the Farmington Valley Health District, will go over the particulars of QPR methods in suicide prevention.

"Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help," wrote the library in an announcement.

Adults and teens are invited to attend the free program, but registration in advance is requested.
