Moving From Volunteer To Career Firefighters, Vol. Fire Co. 9 Saluted
The Branford Police Department is celebrating the Indian Neck/Pine Orchard Vol. Fire Co.9 for its 90 years of dedicated service to the town.
BRANFORD, CT — The Branford Fire Department honored Indian Neck/Pine Orchard Vol. Fire Co.9 in a social media post that celebrates the volunteer company's 90 years of service.
"Yesterday marked the end of an era as the volunteer members of Company 9 responded to their final calls before transitioning to full-time staffing by career personnel," the BFD posted. "The remaining volunteers have joined the ranks of Branford's three other volunteer companies—M.P. Rice Hose Co 2, Short Beach HH&L Company 4 and Stony Creek Rescue Fire Company 5. This transition is a testament to the enduring commitment and adaptability of these volunteers, who continue to serve their community with pride and dedication."

Branford Fire Department proudly recognizes the volunteers, both past and present, of the Indian Neck/Pine Orchard Vol. Fire Co.9 for an incredible 90 years of dedicated service to our community.
In February 1934, a group of thirteen passionate individuals, led by former First Selectman Cliff Collins, petitioned the Board of Fire Commissioners to establish a volunteer fire company in the Indian Neck neighborhood. This vision became a reality, and the company was officially formed—a legacy documented in Hoses, Hooks & Ladders by Doc Johnson.
Over the decades, Company 9 has been home to some of the finest firefighters, many of whom went on to distinguished careers as professional firefighters across Connecticut and beyond. This includes two former Chiefs of Department: Chief Peter Mullen (1984–1994) and Chief John "Jack" Ahern (2002–2015). Today, the newly built Indian Neck Fire Station, which opened in January 2020, stands as a lasting tribute to Chief Peter Mullen's leadership and service.
Volunteerism has been the heart of Company 9. Families often served together, creating a bond that strengthened the community. Notably, Captain Michael “Mooner” Mullen made history as the department’s longest-serving captain, leading for an impressive 35 years. His brother, Ronnie Mullen, transitioned to a career role, serving as Deputy Chief of Operations and Acting Assistant Chief.
In 1995, Company 9 welcomed members of Pine Orchard Fire Company 6 following a merger, ensuring continued service despite a decline in volunteer membership—a challenge faced by many departments.
Thank you, Indian Neck/Pine Orchard Volunteer Fire Company 9, for your 90 years of courage, service, and community spirit. You have left a lasting legacy that will inspire generations to come."
