Suspect in Fatal Bridgeport Crash Assaulted K-9: State Police

BREAKING: The man who police believe struck and killed another motorist and struck two pedestrians has been identified.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — State police have identified the man who they believe was the driver that caused a fatal crash off I-95 Thursday afternoon. Joseph Guzman-Rivera, 22, of Bridgeport was arrested in the basement of a home that he did not know Thursday afternoon following a crash that led to the death of one victim and the injuries of two others.

According to Trooper Kelly Grant, a trooper tried to stop Guzman-Rivera's black infiniti on I-95 at 12:56 p.m. when he sped off and exited the highway before crashing into a blue toyota on Railroad Avenue and continued to strike two pedestrians. He fled on foot before he was found at the Lewis Street residence.

Police say the accused also assaulted K9 Nero and was in possession of heroin, crack cocaine and powder cocaine.

Bridgeport Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, and the Connecticut Post reports he could face motor vehicle charges.

Guzman-Rivera was charged with three counts of possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession of narcotics within 1,500 feet of a school, illegal injuring a police service animal and burglary in the second degree. He was held on a $500,000 bond and due in Bridgeport Superior Court on Aug. 11.
