FAIRFIELD, CT — Democrat Bill Gerber declared victory in Fairfield's First Selectman's race on Wednesday morning, as he held a small lead over incumbent Republican Brenda Kupchick, according to unofficial numbers from his campaign.

Gerber held a 42-vote margin over Kupchick, 8,966 to 8,924.

"Yesterday, thousands of Fairfield voters came to polls in support of the Gerber-Vitale team and in doing so, showed they truly want the collaborative government we need to confront the challenges facing our community," Gerber said in a statement. "We could not be more grateful for the confidence voters have placed in us and the countless family, friends and volunteers who supported us along the way. We know how close elections in Fairfield can be and while yesterday is proof of that, we are confident the results will be unchanged. Today, we begin the work of assembling a new administration and the process for transition. We look forward to continued collaboration with all members of our community and are excited to get to work."
