'Giving Tuesday' is on Tuesday, Dec. 3, when area nonprofits are hoping for an influx of charity to help them help their communities.
FARMINGTON, CT — If you’re like many of your Farmington neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.
Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Farmington area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:
- The Petit Family Foundation aims to raise funds to foster the education of young people, especially those in the sciences; to improve the lives of those affected by chronic illnesses and affected by violence.
- The Farmington Foundation, Inc., is a low-interest student loan fund that is open to all students going to college as an undergraduate.
- The Farmington Village Green And Library Assoc., aims to is to enhance the quality of life and preserve the cultural history of Farmington through the financial support and operation of the Farmington and Barney libraries, Stanley-Whitman House Museum, the village green and Memento Mori Cemetery.
- Voices of Hope Inc., aims to foster culture and social action against hate, bigotry, intolerance, and indifference.
- The Farmington Land Trust Inc. protects open space in the Town of Farmington through the acquisition of open space land, stewardship of acquired land, education of the public about the importance of open space, and advocacy that ensures the protection of Farmington's natural resources.
