Two Farmington HS Grads Earn Local Dem Scholarships

The Farmington Democratic Town Committee offers two scholarship awards to local high school graduates.

FARMINGTON, CT — The Farmington Democratic Town Committee has recently announced its annual scholarship winners.

The Farmington Democratic Town Committee presented its annual James P. Smith Scholarship Awards to graduating FHS seniors Diana Barroso and Jane Guay.

The scholarship is designated for any member of the graduating class of Farmington High School who wishes to pursue his or her education in the field of government or community service.

The FDTC offers up to two scholarships annually, $1,000 each (with money raised from FDTC members and friends of the FDTC).

It goes to students who wish to pursue their education in the field of government or community service.

A proven commitment to local political and/or civic involvement is required.

The winners must enroll in a college or university within the year in which the scholarship is given.

In order to be considered for the FDTC Scholarship, FHS Seniors must fill out an application and submit it to the FHS Counseling Department by the deadline date, typically within the first quarter of a new year.

Applicants must also attend a required individual in-person interview with members of the FDTC Scholarship Committee, where they will be asked to answer follow-up questions from their applications.

Barroso will be attending the University of Rhode Island this fall. Her career goals include working in government, particularly in international relations/diplomacy.

Barroso's major achievements at FHS and in the community include: Volunteer phone banking for federal and local campaigns; Social Justice Club president and council leader; Social Justice Council president; Community Council representative of equity and inclusion for Farmington Board of Education; National Honor Society; president National Spanish Honor Society; founder and president of “Start with Hello,” Sandy Hook Promise Club; and varsity softball captain.

Guay will be attending Boston University this fall in the BU College of Communications.

Her career goals include the integration of political science and journalism, eventually focusing on how politicization and social justice can impact the world of sports.

Some of Guay's major achievements at FHS and in the community include: Supporting FHS annual student voter registration drives; volunteering on federal and local CT campaigns; Farmington poll worker; working in the Farmington Registrar’s Office; FHS Social Justice Council member; Social Justice Week presenter; FHS Young Democrats President; National Honor Society member and historian; Editor FHS Voice; Producer of FHS Riverhawk News; Tri-M Music Honor Society member; Event Leadership Team member, and participant in the Farmington Valley Relay for Life.
