Glastonbury Rec Officials Say 'Be Nice To Our Ice' As Debris Finds Its Way On Ponds
Trees, benches and trash have been finding their way on local ponds used for public skating in the colder months.

GLASTONBURY, CT — Glastonbury recreation officials have a message to the public — "Be nice to our ice."
The message was in reference to a rash of debris finding its way on local ponds used for public skating in the colder months. The Glastonbury Parks and Recreation Department maintains three areas for skating as weather permits — J.B. Williams Pond, Riverfront Park, and Eastbury Pond.
"Please do not throw logs, sticks, garbage or debris onto our skating surfaces. These items create safety hazards and will delay our ability to open these areas for skating. Please help us and be nice to our ice," recreation officials said.

Officials also said the public should not shovel snow off the ice.
"Snow removal will be completed by Parks and Recreation staff when it is safe to do so. Improper shoveling may damage the ice and result in closure of the skating areas," officials said. "While the Town wants everyone to enjoy the ice skating season, the Parks and Recreation Department warns all residents to be aware of unsafe ice conditions. Winter can be a dangerous time when it comes to freezing ponds. All too often, ponds look safe enough for skating but are not. Parents are urged to discuss ice safety with their children now, to ensure a safe and happy winter season."
