Obituary: Marion O. Mahoney, 93, of Glastonbury

Mahoney was a mathematics teacher and an advisor for a Middletown math team, who won the state championship in 1984.

Marion O. Mahoney, 93, of Glastonbury, wife of the late James E. Mahoney, died Tuesday, May 10, 2016, in Glastonbury.

Born September 4, 1922 in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Ake O. and Ada (Shelley) Segerberg. She grew up in Durham and spent most of her life in Middletown and Westbrook and Ft. Myers Beach, Fla.

Mrs. Mahoney was a mathematics teacher, and taught at Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown for 20 years prior to her retirement in 1985. There, she was the advisor for the math team, which won the state championship in 1984. She also taught math in the West Hartford and Putnam school systems.

Before moving to Glastonbury in 2001, Marion was a communicant of St. Mark’s Church in Westbrook, St. Francis of Assisi Church in Middletown, and The Church of the Ascension in Ft. Myers Beach.

Marion is survived by her four children and their spouses: Madge and Mike Thombs of Portsmouth, RI, Tom and Donna Mahoney of Glastonbury, Maureen and Bernie Gillis of East Haddam, and Jim and Debra Mahoney of Glastonbury; seven grandchildren (Brendan, Kate, Max, and Darren Mahoney, and Dann (Carrie) and Chris (Rachel) Thombs, and Amy (Chris) Tillman); great-grandchildren Darien, Leland, and Weston Thombs; and niece Nancy Coe McLane. She was predeceased by her grandson Eric Mahoney and sister Eleanor (Dr. Ronald) Coe.

There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Mass service will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in Marion’s name to the Eric T. Mahoney Memorial Fund, Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, 10 Columbus Blvd, Hartford 06106.
