Putnam Bridge Closure Postponed Until Oct. 4-7

Commuters will still be able to drive southbound on the Putnam Bridge this weekend, despite a previous plan to shut down the Route 3 lanes starting this Friday.

The state Department of Transportation has postponed the closure until October.

The closure will take place from 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, through 5 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7. The southbound lanes of Route 3 will be closed to traffic between Main Street in Glastonbury and the Interstate 91 on ramps in Wethersfield.

The state Department of Transportation is conducting a $30,297,746 rehabilitation project of the bridge, which carries Route 3 between Wethersfield and Glastonbury over the Connecticut River.

Mohawk Northeast Inc. will repair the bridge’s steel and concrete, replace median barriers, and add a pedestrian sidewalk on the south side of the bridge.

Approximately 54,200 vehicles use the bridge each day, according to the Department of Transportation.

The work is expected to finish by May 2015.

The department is currently anticipating additional southbound closures on the following dates:
  • Oct. 18-21
  • Oct. 25-28
  • Nov. 1-4

To avoid the area while driving, take Route 2 to the Charter Oak Bridge, the department said.
