Groton 2023 Election Voter Guide: Candidates, Polling Places

Here's everything you need to know concerning the Groton local elections, including the candidates, polling places, and voting hours.

GROTON, CT — On Nov. 7, Groton residents cast their votes for several key municipal positions. Contested races include: Councilors, Town Council, Board of Education, and Representative Town Meeting .

Polls in Connecticut are open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. You can use the Secretary of State’s website to find your polling place. Voters who are in line by 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote.

Connecticut also allows for Election Day registration at designated centers in each town. People must be registered by 8 p.m. in order to vote using Election Day registration. To receive your absentee ballot, complete and sign an application and return it to your Town Clerk, or you can request an absentee ballot online.

Town Council (all districts)

For Town Council, you will vote for up to nine candidates. The Democratic candidates are Bruce Jones, Juliette Parker, Adam J. Puccino Sr., Portia Bordelon, Jill Rusk, Rachael Franco, David McBride, Dan Gaiewski, and Roscoe Merritt. The Republican candidates are Susan Deane-Shinbrot, Pantea Umrysz, Harry Watson, Thomas Frickman, and John Scott. The Groton Independents Party candidates are Bill Furgueson, Genevieve Cerf, Scott Westervelt, Bruce McDermott, and Lauren Gauthier.

Board of Education (all districts)

For Board of Education, you will vote for up to five candidates. The Democratic candidates are Jay Weitlauf, Adrian Johnson, Ian Thomas, Matthew Shulman, and Robb Meade. The Republican candidates are John Scott and Jenn White.

Board of Education (to fill two-year vacancy, all districts)

The Democratic candidate is Matthew Shulman. The Republican candidate is John Scott.

Mayor (Districts 2, 3)

Democratic candidate is Keith Hedrick is running unopposed.

City Clerk (Districts 2, 3)

Democratic candidate Dani Baycura is running unopposed.

Councilors (Districts 2, 3)

For Councilors, you will vote for up to six candidates. The Democratic candidates are Paul Norris, Gweneviere Depot, Stephen Sheffield, Tony Patterson, Erin Artale, and Christine A. Piazza.

Representative Town Meeting

District 1

For Representative Town Meeting, you will vote for up to six candidates. The Democratic candidates are Lisa Luck, Roscoe Merritt, Joe Baril, and Sheila Perry. The Republican candidates are Joseph Alu, Karin Adams, and Tom Umrysz.

District 2

For Representative Town Meeting, you will vote for up to five candidates. The Democratic candidates are Doris Pulaski, Jackie Massett, Sandra Fetters, and Jean Claude Ambroise. The Republican candidates are Matthew G. Longino and Harry Watson.

District 3

For Representative Town Meeting, you will vote for up to five candidates. The Democratic candidates are Michael Gardiner, Autumn Hanscom, Christy McElroy, and Beverly Herbert. The Republican candidates are Neal Gardiner and Marie Carmella Robertson.

District 4

For Representative Town Meeting, you will vote for up to ten candidates. The Democratic candidates are Chelsea Meade, Kristen Powers, Shawn Powers, Andrew Parrella, Lian Obrey, and Jamie Veazie-Williams. The Republican candidate is Robert Bailey.

District 5

For Representative Town Meeting, you will vote for up to five candidates. The Democratic candidates are Matt Ivey, Gary Welles, Mike Whitney, and Juan Melendez, Jr. The Republican candidate is Susan Deane-Shinbrot.

District 6

For Representative Town Meeting, you will vote for up to six candidates. The Democratic candidates are Bill Keep, Rachael Franco, Paul Fox, and Alfred Fritzsche. The Republican candidates are Gulshan Soni, Emma Gibbs, Alexander Antipas, and Thomas Frickman.

District 7

For Representative Town Meeting, you will vote for up to five candidates. The Democratic candidates are Clarence Casper, Emily Norman, Alexis Dudden, and Sarah Kadden. The Republican candidate is Lynn Crocket Hubbard.
