GROTON, CT — The victim in a fire last weekend at a Groton apartment complex has been identified. Linda Bennett, 78, died in the blaze, The Day of New London reported.

Bennett was a resident of Groton Towers at 39 Broad St. Extension. She reportedly died of smoke inhalation.

At least 125 residents were displaced from the building.

Police and firefighters helped evacuate residents as "flames and smoke came out of the third and fourth floor."

After arriving on scene, a second- then a third-alarm structure fire was declared, officials said.

Many residents were trapped on the building's balconies. Firefighters rescued or removed those residents by using ladders and ladder trucks.
