Support Pours In For Victims Of Groton Towers Fire

"Everything in their apartment is 100% gone; there is absolutely nothing left."

GROTON, CT — Two fundraisers are seeking to gain support for the victims of the Groton Towers fire, which left dozens without housing and led to one death.

The fire broke out at the 39 Broad St. complex Oct. 11. Several residents were trapped on the building's balconies. Firefighters rescued or removed those residents by using ladders and ladder trucks.

Linda Bennett, 78, died in the blaze, The Day of New London reported.

A fundraiser was started by Luis Vanegas for Christina Sanchez and her mother, Lucy Sanchez.

Vanegas said the pair lost everything in the blaze.

"They are both resilient, and I know they will rebuild their lives, but right now they need our support to do so," he wrote.

As of Wednesday afternoon, $6,739 had been raised on 70 donations.

Another fundraiser was started by Hayley Ward.

"We moved into our first apartment this week on Monday 10/6, since finding out I’m newly pregnant," she wrote. "The fire started in the apartment right next to ours. We were only able to leave with the clothes we were wearing at the time of the fire, wallets, and car keys."

Thus far, $600 had been raised on 10 donations.
