Suspect Rams Police Cruiser, Hits Pickup In Wild Groton Chase

GROTON, CT — Police are still searching for a driver accused of leading them on a chase, ramming a police cruiser and crashing into a pickup truck along the way.

Town of Groton police responded Wednesday at 7:33 p.m. after receiving a be-on-the-lookout alert from City of Groton police regarding a black 2002 Mercedes S500 that had fled a traffic stop.

Seconds later, a witness reported seeing the car parked in the lot of a commercial establishment on High Rock Road.

Police found the Mercedes in the parking lot. The Mercedes then rammed a police cruiser and fled, engaging police in a chase. The cruiser received minor damage, and no officers were injured.

The car continued to drive recklessly into oncoming traffic on Poquonnock Road and Long Hill Road, police said.

Police then set up stop sticks in the area of Long Hill Road and Kings Highway.

The Mercedes approached the stop sticks but veered away, striking a pickup truck which was heading north on Long Hill Road.

The crash caused disabling damage to the pickup. There were no apparent injuries to the two adults and juvenile in the truck, but the juvenile was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.

The Mercedes then fled the accident, continuing on to Kings Highway and Bridge Street. Police officers pursued and the car went onto I-95 southbound.

On I-95 in Waterford, state police took the lead in the chase. The Mercedes approached a construction zone at exit 74 in East Lyme, came to a stop on the shoulder, and three people fled, going into the woods.

Police chased after them and took a 14-year-old girl into custody. Another 17-year-old boy was also captured. The driver has not been found or identified, police said.

The highway was shut down in both directions at the time but has since reopened.

The two juveniles who were caught were charged with interfering with an officer and released on a juvenile summons.
