1,499 Groton Residents Without Power Due To Henri

GROTON, CT — As Tropical Storm Henri moved through the region Sunday numerous roads are closed and nearly 1,500 residents are without power.

Earlier on Sunday, Groton's town manager issued a state of emergency, noting a "condition of extreme peril to life and property exists." The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Groton and Groton Long Point at around the same time, 11 a.m. The warning has since expired.

Tropical Storm Henri made landfall near the Connecticut/Rhode Island border at 12:15 p.m. Sunday.

Groton police addressed the storm's predicted path and its aftermath Sunday afternoon:

Update Sunday at 1 p.m. Police said roads are blocked, some streets are flooded and a number of traffic lights are out. And police have already responded to 66 calls for service.

The Groton Town Police Department Issued the following statement:

"The town's Emergency Management and Police Department urges citizens to stay indoors until the storm has passed for their own safety and for the safety of first responders. The town opened the shelter at Fitch High School, 101 Groton Long Point Road, Groton, CT as of 6:00 pm on Saturday, August 21, 2021 for those seeking refuge. COVID precautions will still be in place and citizens are required to wear face masks while in the shelter. Prior to entering the shelter staff will screen each individual with COVID related questions as well as a temperature check. Staff will provide additional guidance as needed.

If you plan on seeking refuge at the shelter you should consider bringing the following:
∙ Blankets, Pillows, Toiletries, Medicine, additional clothing, special dietary needs, cell phones with charge cords and head phones, portable electronics with head phones and any other items you may require that are not listed.
∙ PETS: Pets are allowed at the shelter and the Town Animal Control Officers will be available to help you with your pet related needs.

First responders including police, fire and EMS have been responding to several calls of downed tree limbs and power lines. Citizens are warned to avoid any downed lines as they can be extremely dangerous.
