United Way Taps CEO to Lead Campaign for Children, Families

United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut named Greg Barats as the chair of its 2016 campaign.

HARTFORD, CT — United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut (United Way) has announced Greg Barats, as the chair of the organization’s 2016 Campaign. In his role as campaign chair, Barats will lead a community-wide effort to engage individuals, businesses, municipalities and nonprofits in raising funds to support programs and initiatives working to change community conditions.

Barats is president and chief executive officer (CEO) of The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB), part of Munich Re. He also chaired the 2015 United Way Campaign, helping to raise more than $22 million for the community. As the 2016 Campaign Chair, Barats becomes the first two-time campaign chair in United Way’s history.

“It is an honor to serve as campaign chair for the second consecutive year,” Barats said. “I’m excited about the opportunity to build upon the success of last year’s campaign and to produce even greater results for children and families in our community.”

An executive of Hartford Steam Boiler and two other business leaders founded the United Way in 1924. In addition to this long-standing partnership, Hartford Steam Boiler is also celebrating its 150th anniversary.

“Greg’s leadership has been an invaluable asset in raising the resources critical to supporting positive change for children and families in our community,” said United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut President and CEO Paula S. Gilberto. “We are fortunate to have such a committed champion.”

As president and CEO of HSB Group, Barats has overall responsibility for HSB’s insurance and engineering operations worldwide. He has further expanded HSB’s products and services to keep the company ahead of the curve on trends ranging from equipment to cyber in today’s world. He holds seven U.S. patents, and he started HSB’s Strategic Corporation Venture fund based in San Francisco.
