Council OKs Open Space Purchase, Solar Panels for Remington Rand Building
Middletown's land purchase ups its open space in Maromas to 2,000 acres and the Greenskies solar energy deal will reduce the city's energy costs and carbon dioxide emissions.
The common council Monday approved the $150,000 purchase of 50 acres of open space in the Maromas area of Middletown.
The purchase will be made using a $100,000 general fund appropriation and $50,000 from the city's open space fund, according to the Hartford Courant.
Maromas consists of 2,000 heavily wooded acres in the southeastern section of the city, bordered by the Connecticut River, according to Northeast Utilities. It is one of the largest contiguous forests on the western side of the river.
The council also authorized a contract Monday with Middletown-based Greenskies Renewable Energy, a solar energy firm, which will install a solar roof on the former Remington Rand factory building in the North End of town, according to the Hartford Courant.

As part of the agreement, the Courant reports, Greenskies will install a new roof on the building and a solar system that will produce 1.5 million kilowatt hours of energy per year.
