CROMWELL, CT — A would-be car thief was yanked from a vehicle by its owner after crashing it at a Cromwell business, local police said.

Cromwell police said that, just before 1 p.m. Monday, they received a call that a person who tried to steal a vehicle was being detained by a civilian at Up In Smoke, a cigar shop at 91 Berlin Road.

According to an incident report, Jahil Valle, a 21-year-old from Meriden, jumped into a vehicle that was running and unoccupied outside the business.

He tried to drive away, but smashed into a sign, according to an incident report. The vehicle's owner then ran from the business and pulled Valle from the driver's seat and detained him until police arrived, according to an incident report.

Vale was subsequently charged with second-degree criminal trover, larceny of a motor vehicle and first-degree criminal mischief, police said. He posted a $10,000 bond and is due in Middletown Superior Court on May 6, records show.
