UPDATE: Dive Teams Locate Car In Connecticut River In Middletown

A search for a reported vehicle in the Connecticut River has located a car in the water, police said.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — A car was located in a section of the Connecticut River in Middletown Wednesday as a search continued from the previous night, police said.

Police confirmed that a "car" was found by dive teams in the area of a boathouse and ramp used to launch non-powered craft like kayaks and crew shells, police said.

The Middletown Police Marine Unit and Dive Team worked tirelessly throughout the day on the Connecticut River," police said. "They were able to locate and ultimately recover the vehicle that drove into the river last night. The vehicle was found to be unoccupied at the time of recovery. The incident is still under investigation."

At 7:41 p.m. Tuesday, responders rushed to the area of Harbor Park after receiving calls about a vehicle being driven into the Connecticut River, police said. The vehicle was believed to have entered the water on the north side of the park, according to an incident report.

Middletown police and fire crews initiated a coordinated effort to locate the vehicle, including the use of drones.

The search team was unable to locate a vehicle in the water and search and rescue efforts were suspended due to poor lighting conditions and safety, according to an incident report.

The search picked back up at 9 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

Police said there was no threat to the public.
