Middlesex Community College Awards Scholarships to Students

Kendel Souza of Middletown High School was one of many throughout the region to earn a $1,000 prize.

The Middlesex Community College Foundation has begun to offer a new scholarship program to 20 area high schools.

After review of applications and guidance counselor recommendations, the Foundation has awarded $1,000 scholarships to nine graduating high school students who will be attending full-time at Middlesex Community College this fall.

The scholarship is open to high school seniors in the 18 towns that MxCC serves, which includes all of the towns within Middlesex County, as well as Meriden, Wallingford, and Rocky Hill.

To be eligible for the scholarship, high school students must have an above average GPA, have an excellent record of community service, and have the ability to be leaders.

“Middlesex Community College has so much to offer our community,” said George Eames, chair of the MxCC Foundation.

“We feel that by initiating this scholarship program throughout our geographic area we will ensure that the student body at Middlesex has greater representation from all the communities in our region. By the numbers, these are the students who will live and work in our part of Connecticut after they graduate. All of us will therefore benefit by helping more of our own students earn college degrees.”

Dr. Patricia Charles, superintendent of Middletown Public Schools, was pleased to find out that one of her students was awarded a scholarship.
“Kendel Souza is a great contributor to classroom discussions,” said Dr. Charles.

“She is well spoken and speaks with conviction about things she believes in.  She is goal-oriented and has a clear vision for her future. She intends to become an elementary school teacher. We are delighted to learn that she will be the recipient of the MxCC Foundation scholarship.”

“The Meriden Public Schools appreciates MxCC's partnerships and we applaud them for offering these scholarships,” said Dr. Mark Benigni, superintendent of Meriden Public Schools. “This will certainly help two of our students begin their college experience.”

Dr. Benigni is also a corporator of the MxCC Foundation, and was instrumental in the design of this scholarship program. The concept was developed in February by the Foundation’s Public Relations Committee.  The Foundation received a great response based on a short marketing time and is happy to announce that this will be an annual scholarship.
