While on duty, lifeguards identified a male patron in the shallow end of the pool who appeared unsteady and visibly distressed. Although initially responsive, the man’s condition rapidly deteriorated. Lifeguards immediately removed him from the water, placed him on a backboard, and determined he had no pulse and wasn't breathing.
They promptly beganCPR and deployed an Automated External Defibrillator, delivering multiple shocks while maintaining continuous resuscitation. Their quick recognition, early CPR, and early defibrillation established the critical chain of survival before first responders arrived, officials said.

Hunter’s Ambulance, the Middletown Fire Department, and Middlesex Hospital EMS continued advanced life support.
The man ultimately received seven defibrillation shocks, achieved return of spontaneous circulation, and was transported to Middlesex Hospital before being transferred to a higher-level cardiac facility.
Following further treatment, including placement of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, the patient made a full recovery and was discharged home just four days later with no neurological deficits, Middlesex Halth officials said.
"This outcome highlights the importance of training, teamwork, and rapid action," officials said. "Middlesex Hospital EMS extends its gratitude and congratulations to the YMCA lifeguards and all first responders whose coordinated efforts directly saved a life."
