Juneteenth, the oldest nationally-celebrated holiday marking the ending of slavery in the United States, traces its roots to June 19, 1865 when Major Gen. Gordon Granger of the Union Army landed in Galveston, Texas and informed the enslaved populace they had been freed under President Abraham Lincoln's’ Emancipation Proclamation – 2 ½ years after the document was signed. On May 27, 2022, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont signed into law Public Act 22-128, which establishes a new legal state holiday on June 19 of each year to be known as Juneteenth Independence Day.
