The Emancipation of Hannah Faythe Winslow: A Woman's Journey in Colonial America" released in August 2024, is author Karen Warfield's second historical fiction novel. The story follows Hannah Faythe after the Mohegan / Pequot War when she travels from Agawom Massachusetts to Gales Ferry, Connecticut as part of the River Colony's Missionaries to establish praying towns to bring Christianity to the southeastern tribes.
Ms. Warfield spent three years researching the colonial/indigenous language and the idioms that bring this story to life. The novel contains over 130 footnotes which permit the reader to drill down into various subjects such as the colonial legal system, punishments, reproductive rights, genocide, and suicide. As she explains the good old days were not good and often brutal.
This story has elements of deception and redemption as the female characters maneuver through their patriarchal society while striving to preserve their worthiness. She states, 'It was because of a patriarchal society my female characters were denied opportunities to realize their full potential. I provide my characters with hope to become more than what society tells them they must become.'
