New Candidate for Oxford First Selectman Position Emerges

A current town official announced that she has enough signatures to be on the ballot this fall as a petitioning candidate.

OXFORD, CT — Selectman Kathy Johnson announced Thursday that she obtained enough signatures to run as a petition candidate for First Selectman in the November election. She'll be one of Incumbent First Selectman George R. Temple's opponents as he seeks a fourth-term this fall.

Johnson, a former Democrat recently switched parties to be unaffiliated. She said she will be funding her own campaign. “As a member of the Board of Selectmen, I am pleased to say that I have worked to keep our town safe and prosperous," Johnson said in a news release. She said that having no loyalty to any political party she has no obligation to any donors. “I am free to be my own person. I will owe no one person anything,’’ said Johnson in a statement. “I will owe our town and our citizens my best efforts and my full attention to the entire town and to individual citizens.’’ She added, “No one will be ignored or forgotten, especially those who are often dismissed because they hold no power or money, are elderly or infirm and feel they have no voice.’’

Johnson who has served as a First Selectman and Deputy Treasurer and who is a current selectman said she is working with the board of selectmen to replace the Center School and decreasing taxes while increasing economic development. Johnson said she hopes the voters will keep her in office. “I simply and wholeheartedly offer my leadership and service to our town and to its citizens,’’ she said in a statement.
