Oxford First Selectman Decides His Political Future

The first selectman released a statement Monday concerning whether he'll seek a fourth term of office.

OXFORD, CT — First Selectman George R. Temple announced that he willl seek a fourth term of office. Temple, a Republican, said in a statement, "It is with a great deal of humility and enthusiasm that I announce I will seek re-election as Oxford First Selectman. The town has realized an unprecedented success in economic development over the past five years.

"Our progress has been featured in the Sunday editions of all three major Connecticut newspapers. We have the third lowest mil rate in New Haven County and our administration has recommended an 8.5 percent reduction in taxes for fiscal year 2017-2018. Our rating with Moody’s’ is 2AA which is the best that we have ever done. We have paid off over $10 million dollars in long and short term debt. Our economic success has allowed us to address other needs. We have a new field complex at the high school, we are constructing a new library, have repaired severely deteriorated roads, constructed a new animal shelter, improved our high school baseball and softball fields, repaired the senior center, made town hall handicapped accessible, replaced roofs on Quaker Farms School, town hall and opened a new complex at Aggie Park.

We have updated vehicles at the ambulance, police department and fire department and replaced unsafe and antiquated equipment at public works. We are planning a downtown area with park benches and sidewalks and continue to work with the developers of Quarry Walk.

I am proud of my record and the record of the many people who serve on boards and commissions. We have administered the town without regard to politics or private grudges. I will continue to be accessible to all my fellow townspeople and look forward to continuing to serve all of them," Temple concluded in his prepared statement.
