In Memoriam: Tessie Rose Szalkiewicz

The long-time Rocky Hill resident passed away Jan. 6 at the age of 98.

Tessie Rose (Jasiecki) Szalkiewicz, died Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Apple Rehab in Rocky Hill.

Tessie was born October 6, 1917 in Denmark, Maine. She was 98 years old. Tessie was the daughter of Benjamin and Phyllis Jasiecki both parents were born in Poland.

She was married to the late John Szalkiewicz of 48 Birch Rd. and lived in Rocky Hill for the past 73 years. She came to Connecticut to work as a Nanny to her cousins, and later took a job at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, where she met her husband John.

Tessie had 6 children. Her oldest son John Jr., died at age 35 of cancer.

She leaves behind a daughter, Judy Cate of Manning, SC., and her husband Buddy, Gregory and Donna Szalkiewicz of Old Wethersfield, Anthony and Karen Szalkiewicz of Portland, Jim and Christine Szalkiewicz of Rocky Hill, and Stan and Dagmar of Talbott, TN. There are 14 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren in the family. She leaves many nieces and nephews, and a sister Sophie in Southington.

Tessie had two sisters and a brother.

While raising her family Tessie, always helped her neighbors, friends and church members when they needed something done. She adored her grandchildren and loved it when they visited her. She was known for her pecan tartlets and continued to make them until she was 90. She loved her garden and shared its bounty with family and neighbors. Tessie also loved her flowers and looked forward to Spring.

The family will receive friends at Rose Hill Funeral Home 580 Elm St Rocky Hill on Monday, January 11, from 6 to 8 PM.
Friends and relatives of Tessie are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday January 12, at 9:30 AM in St. James Church 767 Elm St., Rocky Hill. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Tessie’s memory to the St. James Church food bank.
