Dogwood Tree Planted In Memory Of Dedicated South Windsor Volunteer
A white dogwood tree was planted Friday at the Major Michael Donnelly Land Preserve in memory of Charles Manzella.

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — Since moving from New Jersey to Connecticut in 2014, Charles Manzella devoted a lot of his time volunteering at the South Windsor Farmers Market. Retired after a 37-year career as an educator, he also took many walks in the Major Michael Donnelly Land Preserve adjacent to his home, accompanied by his dog, Mikey, and/or his grandson, Hunter.
Manzella passed away in October at age 70, but his passion for nature and the outdoors will forever be commemorated, as a white dogwood tree was planted in his memory Friday at the land preserve. The tree was purchased at Prides Corner Farms in Lebanon, and donated to the park in his honor on behalf of the South Windsor Food Alliance.
His wife Carol, daughter Cara Quinn and grandchildren Hunter and Madeline Quinn were all on hand for the dedication.

"How lovely that we’ll be able to see 'his' tree every day from our home next door," Carol Manzella said. "Our family is so grateful that the Food Alliance has chosen to plant a tree in Charlie’s memory. It is a tribute to a life of service and recognition of the warmth and caring Charlie brought to everything he did."
Shortly after moving to town, Manzella was recruited by a neighbor, current town councilman Andrew Paterna, to volunteer at the farmers market. He assisted the vendors in setting up in the morning and helped direct parking cars.

"He was always upbeat with a smile and a kind word for everyone," his daughter said.
Tim Shephard donated the red rock that will be used for the engraved message dedicating the tree 'In Loving Memory of Charles Manzella.' The South Windsor Parks and Recreation Department delivered the tree and assisted in the planting.
"Our team is planting this memorial tree in memory of Charles and his dedicated work, great humor, and his loving presence at the South Windsor Farmers Market," Paterna said.
Hunter Quinn said, "The event was so beautiful. I will always have this tree to remember my papa."
