South Windsor Junior American Legion Baseball Wins 2013 Northeast Regional Tournament

The following is a press release from Manchester American Legion Baseball: 

Eight New England teams from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Cohassett, Massachusetts, Fairfield, Connecticut, Methuen, Massachusetts, Nashua, New Hampshire, Riverside, Rhode Island and Westbrook Maine spent the weekend in South Windsor this past weekend. Each team having an eye on bringing home the North East American Legion Junior RegionalTrophy.

Teams trickled in early Friday morning only to spend the day in indoor batting cages, while moms spent the day at the mall, because of never ending rain which cancelled the first day of play.  SouthWindsor ground crews and parents spent the later part of Friday evening bailing water off the field only to return again on Saturday morning at 6 a.m. to ready the two fields for play.

South Windsor, the host team, won the Northeast Junior American Legion Regional Tournament with a 8-1 win over Riverside, Rhode Island, in the Championship game on Sunday at Rotary field in South Windsor.  

Nick Romaniello pitched a complete game allowing just 7 hits and walking just 3 Rhode Island hitters. Not the way South Windsor hoped, they ended up being the visiting team in the final game on Sunday afternoon.  Home team Riverside, Rhode Island, cruised through their first two games, defeating Methuen, Massachusetts by 6 runs and followed that win in the second game of the day defeating Westbrook, Maine by 10 runs in the nightcap.

South Windsor, who finished third in Connecticut Zone 8 play, was the decided underdog. With afresh start in the Northeast Tournament, South Windsor won their two games by a total of 4 runs and one of those games took extra innings to do so. In its first game of the tournament, South Windsor defeated Westbrook, Maine, 6-3 behind David Caye’s complete game 5-hit pitching and 2 hits and 2 RBIs by Bryan Bakas, 2 RIBs by Adam Bettigole and 2 runsscored by both Joey Tamburro and Derek Chouinard.

In its 2nd game of the tournament, South Windsor defeated Nashua, New Hampshire 2-1 in 8 innings behind an excellent pitching performance from Adam Bettigole who allows only 2 hits and 3 walks with 6 strikeouts.  

South Windsor outfielders Dan Ray and Garrett Brown made game saving catches in the outfield to keep South Windsor from being eliminated Saturday evening. In the Championship game, South Windsor found themselves down by one run at the end of thefirst inning. Riverside’s Josiah Hatch led off the game reaching base on an 8-pitch walk. Colin Costa singled moving Hatch into scoring position. After looking at one pitch, Mike Allienello hit a double scoring Hatch. Knowing that they were not going to out power Rhode Island, South Windsor played small and aggressive baseball scoring their first two runs of the game on successive squeeze bunts by Derek Chouinard and Josh Linnell. 

Those runs gave South Windsor’s Nick Romaniello all the cushion that he would need. South Windsor continued to open the lead scoring runs in the second, fourth, and sixth innings by stealing bases and aggressively taking extra bases on what seemed every hit. South Windsor’s Dan Ray and Adam Bettigole each had a single and a double, and Derek Chouinard had two singles.Colin Costa led Riverside, Rhode Island with 2 hits and a run batted in.
