SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — A wrong-way driver was involved in a multi-vehicle accident resulting in another driver being hospitalized, then fled on foot, according to fire officials.

Emergency responders were dispatched following the report of a crash involving a wrong-way driver on I-291 westbound Tuesday at 9:15 a.m.

The wrong-way driver entered the highway in Windsor and traveled east in the westbound lanes over the Connecticut River into South Windsor, fire officials said.

An "unconfirmed report" stated that the wrong-way driver struck at least one car, causing it to roll over.

A third vehicle was involved in the crash before the wrong-way driver slammed into the median, the fire department said.

The wrong-way driver fled on foot.

The driver of the car that rolled over was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Traffic was reduced to one lane on I-291 with debris in the road at the two crash sites.

State police are investigating.
