Ex-Eastern CT AT&T Store Staffer Facing More Claims Of Fudging Accounts For Commission

STAFFORD, CT — A former employee at AT&T retail stores in eastern Connecticut is facing an additional state charge of committing third-degree computer crime six times over while being accused again of fudging customer accounts to earn sales commissions.

She was originally charged in January for an incident in the Stafford AT&T store for an incident 11 months earlier, according to warrants.

Katie Ann Barnaby, 35, posted a $10,000 bond for each of six more warrants and is due in Rockville Superior Court on July 22, records show. She was served the six warrants on July 10, state police said.

According to the warrants, the state police Eastern District Major Crime Squad began investigating Barnaby on Feb. 7, 2024, after a customer at a Stafford AT&T store — where she worked — accused her of misleading practices that secretly added features and charges to a phone and tablet totaling about $2,000 over a 26-month period.

According to warrants, since her arrest last January was announced, other customers have come forward from stores at which she worked with similar accusations:

  • Three from a Stafford AT&T store
  • Two from a Willimantic store
  • One from a Colchester store

The AT&T stores were third-party managed, officially licensed retail outlets, according to warrants.

She received commissions on all the secretly loaded, extra features, warrants state.
